Port of Antwerp

Berth request (barge)

Used by the barge operator who has to load or unload containers, to send berth requests to the operators of terminals where it is wished to call, in the Barge Traffic System (BTS).

The volume of barge traffic in the port of Antwerp has increased exponentially in the past few years. To deal with this a special platform has been created that enables barge operators to request a berth in a uniform way, for loading or unloading containers.

How does it work?

A barge operator who wishes to load or unload containers uses the Barge Traffic System (BTS) to send berth requests to the terminals at which it is wished to call. Whenever berth requests sent to different terminals are too close together in time, a conflict message is sent. This enables the terminal operator to schedule the barges and keep them informed.

Wat zijn de voordelen?

  • Uniform handling of berth requests, with barge operators kept informed of the schedule
  • Shorter waiting time for barges at the terminals
  • Fewer errors
  • Smooth, interactive scheduling of calls and handling
  • Barge register, terminal information and scheduling information permanently available and up to date
